Interview with the german band Sloppy Joe's

Hello everyone, before starting with the actual interview, can you introduce yourself to the readers?

Hey Guys, we are Sloppy Joe's - a heavy rock band from Hamburg, Germany. It's Jesse Garon (Vocals, Guitar), Johnny Angel (Bass) and Pätzy Dävey (Drums)

- Can you tell us about your musical project and how it was born?

We started in 2011 as a three piece rock band. All three members of Sloppy Joe’s played in their own bands of different musical genres before. We have roots in rock’n’roll, soul, heavy metal, punk and progressive rock. When we first met we realized that we have a common goal of making music: Creating a hard-hitting rock sound and delivering a great live performance.

- How did you think of your name? Can you retrace the genesis and the meaning of it?

Our band name does not refer to the Sloppy Joe's burger or the Sloppy Joe's Bar at Key West (Florida, USA). It's related to a quote from the classic movie "Citizen Kane". Just watch the movie to find the right scene. In the past it seemed like it's a big challenge to spell this name correctly. We were very often introduced by radio presenters or people from the music press like "Here they are: Sloppy Joe!" and we thought: "Hey! Say Joe'S! - Don't forget the S at the end." It looks like peaople ignore the last letter because of the apostrophe. Sometimes we think it should have been better to choose another name. But on the other hand you can scream this name very long and loud!

- What are your influences and who inspired you?

Our biggest inspiration are legendary hard rock bands like KISS, AC/DC, Iron Maiden and more: Just bands that can still conquer the world. These bands are very focused on delivering a big live rock show. So we took these influences and mixed in our own style.

- Tell me your favorite bands, for each member of the group?

Jesse Garon: KISS, AC/DC, King's X, Elvis Presley

Johnny Angel: Sisters Of Mercy, The Misfits, Iron Maiden

Pätzy Dävey: Rammstein, Dream Theater

- How do you compose your songs?

It starts with an idea of a hookline, some lyrics and a blistering guitar riff in my head (Jesse Garon). Then we come together and make it a Sloppy Joe's tune.

- Tell us about your first live experience and your most recent!

Our very first show was a concert in May 2013 at the Indra Club in Hamburg, Germany. The venue is very famous, because it's the place where The Beatles played their first in their career. It was a secret show. Nobody in the audience knew that we will be playing. We were on fire and after almost 3 hours we left the stage and the crowd was getting crazy. It was fantastic.

- Have you ever had "stage anxiety"? Do you have any suggestions for newbies?

Before we hit the stage we are always a bit nervous, but not anxious. Our intent is to perform the coming concert better than any show before. Just think of this and you will be successful.

- What do you think of your fans? What is the strangest anecdote related to them?

Without the fans we are nothing. A rock band needs people who come to the shows and buy records and merch. If nobody is interested to listen to your music any longer, you can quit. We have a very cool anecdote to tell. Six years ago we were touring through Switzerland. At the beginning we met the security guy at the live venue where we played the first show. He really felt in love with our music and later never missed the chance to watch our concerts in Switzerland and Germany. He became a real Sloppy Joe's concert traveller, what makes us very proud.

- Before concluding, we leave room for you to add the last few things!

It's not easy for bands like us to survive at these times. So please support your local bands. Go to concerts, help the venues to be alive and never stop rockin'! Thank you in advance! LISTEN TO GET IN THE RING, that will be out on the 21th of October!
